Ancient Lake   2 comments

Ancient Lake

Did you know me
did you see me
I was ancient lake
forever growing

Did you see me
I was salt water more
times than the sea
until my soul was drained

Look around me
Did you know me

Did you know me
I was water skink and legless lizard
I flew on wing
I was Caspian Tern and Great Egret

Did you see me
with shining jewels of
mollusc coxiella shells
like a necklace on my shore

Look around me
Did you see me

Salt bleached rocks lay exposed
like a spine of some great creature
from a distance, like desert
mirage, they seem to float

I am history living
I am history dying
I am ancient lake
I am Corangamite

Did you know me
did you see me

My Fathers Day   3 comments

My Fathers Day

the day my father died
Mrs Quigley picked me up from school
she used to live across the road from us
she used to smoke 60 Park Drive cigarettes a day
she was as skinny as a rake and had only had daughters
I was in love with one of her daughters
she told me that my father had died
she told he had had a heart attack
she told me he was a good man
I gripped my school bag tightly
the rest of the journey home
we sat in silence

oh wait
she told me I had to be strong
for my mother
