If We Didn’t Have the Downs   Leave a comment

If we didn’t have the downs
There could never be the ups
If we didn’t have the tears
There would be no chin to cup
There would be no eyes to gaze in
To reassure the one we love
It’s ok my lover for now things are looking up

If we didn’t have the downs
would we ever need the clowns?
Or need to turn a scowl around
to turn a frown upside down
would there ever be a reason
for our heart to skip a beat
if we saw the one we loved dancing in the street

If we didn’t have the downs
It could be, just like this
An agony without the ecstasy
A pain without the bliss
Of a future with no past
Of a mirror with no glass
Or worse – my good looks without my charm

If we didn’t have the downs
how could we climb back?
From the depths of self-despair
from a life where no one cares
to where we are number one
where we wake to hear the bird song
to know the ups and downs of life are what make it all worthwhile

If we didn’t have the downs
what would poets write about?
Or country singers sing about
where would the tears fall?
Where would the rivers run?
If the moon was always clouded
and the sun blazed brightly and was never done

If we didn’t have the downs
how could we compare
what others never have
and some just want to share
Should we, could we, would we
give our self a chance to grow
if in all of it we never ever, ever know

If we have never had the downs
if we have never shared the pain
never gifted what is in our heart
never shared the grief or strain
if we have never had the downs
if we have never had the ups

What would we ever do if grief was dealt to us as trumps?
